Polysomnography
- Polysomnography (PSG) is a type of sleep study that uses a multi-parameter monitoring system to aid in the diagnosis of various sleep disorders.
- The PSG sleep study is performed overnight in a controlled environment such as a hospital ward or a dedicated sleep laboratory.
- The PSG device that is used monitors many body functions including brain activity, eye movements, muscle activity, heart rhythm, breathing functions,
blood oxygen levels and body position. - Not all medical aids pay for PSGs, you may have to have a Home based sleep study.
- All options will be discussed with you prior to the procedure being booked.

Home Based Sleep Studies
- Home based studies also known as sleep screening, monitor fewer
parameters and are used more for the diagnosis of sleep related breathing
disorders. - Home based studies are conducted in your own home. You will be required
to collect and return the sleep equipment. A consultant will show you how
to connect yourself to the equipment at home. - Not all medical aids pay for Home based studies, you may have to be
admitted to a facility for the sleep test. - All options will be discussed with you prior to the procedure being booked.
CPAP Titrations
- If you have been diagnosed with having a sleep related breathing disorder,
you will in all likelihood need to spend a night sleeping on a CPAP therapy
device. - CPAP therapy is the Gold standard for treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
and is also used to manage other breathing disorders like hypoventilation
and hypoxemia. - The titration test involves sleeping on a small bedside device that is attached
to a mask via a hose. The device blows a gentle stream of air through the
mask which is worn over your nose or nose and mouth. This stream of air
has a splint like effect in the airway preventing airway collapse (obstructive
apnea). The air pressure will fluctuate according to your specific needs
through the night. - The results of this titration are very important in determining your long term
treatment on CPAP therapy. Your equipment supplier will request a copy of
these results in order to advise you on the best device and mask to
purchase.
